Ayurveda Campus is the internal college of Institute of Medicine (IOM), Tribhuvan University (TU) in Nepal. It is located in Kirtipur, Kathmandu. It has its own Teaching Hospital recently developed. Nearby is National Ayurveda Research and Training Centre (NARTC) within TU premises.
- It runs BAMS program.
- IOM has provided affiliation to Nepal Ayurveda Medical College in Birgunj -from 2067 BS (2010 AD). Nepal Sanskrit University runs a college in Dang and has given affiliation to Janaki Ayurveda Medical college in Janakpur.
- IOM, Office of Exam Control in Maharajgunj invites application from deserving candidates during Bhadra/Aswin (September). Entrance exam for all bachelor level programs (BAMS, BASLP, BDS, MBBS, BPH, BMLT, BN, B.Sc. Nursing, BMIT ...... so on) opens at the same time.
- Out of the 100 marks, 75 marks are for Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) and 25 marks are for Ayurveda.
- Minimum criteria for eligibility: +2/I.Sc(Bio), AHA or equivalent, mark obtained => 50%.
- Preparation classes to Ayurveda will be conducted by the students before entrance exam for about a week. And some private institutes also conduct the preparation classes. Preparation on PCB should be on the primary focus. Sincere and goal-oriented persons can achieve the success. Preparation classes conducted by students inclined to any organization may not hamper the study of studious person.
- After the result from IOM Dean's office, students have to contact Ayurveda Campus to get admission.
- The aim of the BAMS course is to produce a physician who can meet the general health care need of people and has the working knowledge/skill of Ayurveda, and Modern medicine/methods as well.
- Top 15 students will get full scholarship (say subsidised) and the cost will be around 1.25 lakhs, while other 12 (next yer more 5 students will be enrolled) students will get partial scholarship and the cost will be approx 8 lakhs. From the year 2011 AD there is one seat for foreign students.
- The duration of the course is 5 and 1/2 years, 18 months for each three phases and 1 year for internship.
- General physiology, pathology, anatomy (including dissection), yoga, microbiology, biochemistry, Medicinal Herbs (dravyaguna), Ayurvedic medicine (rasa shastra & bhaisajya kalpana) - both theory and practical classes take place in Ayurveda Campus. And the most of the theoritical classes (including that of Sanskrit, Astanga Samgraha, Charak Samhita and Sushruta Samhita) take place in Ayurveda Campus.
- Radiology, Pharmacology, and Forensic Medicine and toxicology (postmortem) practical take place in Maharajgunj Medical Campus, IOM.
- Various field trips for Medicinal plants, Medicine preparations, Community medicine (swasthavrita) are conducted around the valley and within the country. Naturopathy, Tropical and Infectious Medicin are trained in other centers within the valley.
- Junior internship takes place in TU Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj. The elective postings will be 1) Radiology and Medical Imaging, 2) Emergency, 3) Gynaecology and Obstetrics, 4) Surgery, 5) Pediatrics, and 6) Orthopedics - each of 1 month duration. Other departments: 7) ENT, 8) Psychiatry: - each for 15 days. There will be posting in Eye/Ophthalmology Department as well.
- There will be a 15 day elective posting in Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital, Teku.
- About 3 months bedside classes will take in TUATH or Naradevi Hospital prior to Junior Internship Elective postings.
- One year internship takes place in Naravedi Hospital and TU Ayurveda Teaching Hospital, Kirtipur. TU/IOM provides Rs. 8000 (approx) studentship per month to the interns.
- Boys get Hostel facility and the girls will probably get the facility from this year. Till then they have to stay in their own, in private hostels or in rented room, or in their own house if they have it nearby.
- Students make an All India tour at the final year.
- Consultation with students, teachers and well-wishers may help to decide and work ahead.
- Proper utilization of time (and other things) for study (and other work) may lead towards success/satisfaction.
